Dear Schechter Elementary School community, Moadim L’Simcha and welcome back (ever so briefly!) to school, after a week-long break in observance of Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Just one more grouping of Tishrei holidays – there will be an early dismissal on Monday, October 20th at 1:30 for Hoshana Rabbah, we will celebrate Shmini Atzeret on Tuesday, October 21st, and Simchat Torah on Wednesday, October 22nd. Then it is back to school, once again, on Thursday, October 23rd. Whether or not you are not a member of a synagogue, all of the synagogues in the area would be happy to have you and your family join them for the fun and festivities of Erev Simchat Torah, celebrated this coming Tuesday evening. I want to take you back almost 2 weeks and share with you my impressions of the PA – Kindergarten Shabbat Fair which was held on Sunday, October 5th. For two hours that morning, to the delight of the many kindergarten families who attended, the elementary school was turned into a virtual tour of Shabbat. Each child received a “passport” which was stamped at each station along the way, as children and parents worked together to make candles, wine, challah, tzedakkah boxes, and learned to set the Shabbat table and recite the blessings for Shabbat evening. The entire program was parent-run, with many, many volunteers involved, including students from the Solomon Schechter Middle and High Schools. No matter what the level of each family’s home observance is, there was something new and interesting for parents and children to learn and to share. It is not easy, or inexpensive, to assemble such a high quality program, which was free for PA members, and it was obvious to me that a big part of what makes this school so wonderful is the hard work and dedication of the Parents Association. Countless hours went into organizing this wonderful program, led by Lori Kantorowitz and Sheri Balsam. Kashar Koach to Lori and Sheri and to all the volunteers who helped them bring Shabbat alive for the newest members of the Schechter community. I am very excited to share with you the news of new additions to our community: Rabbi Moshe and Aviva Schwartz are thrilled to announce the birth of their daughter, Liba Maayan [her heart is a fountain]. She was born on Tuesday, October 14th. Liba was named for Rabbi Schwartz’ father, Gershon z"l, whose heart was always open and who loved his extended family and gave so much to all those he served as Rabbi. Rabbi Gershon Schwartz was a heart organ donor -and so Liba was also given in that spirit as a lasting reminder that he is still with us today. Rabbi Moshe Schwartz is the Director of Jewish Life and SREL Rabbinic Fellow for the Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County and the Solomon Schechter High School of Long Island, and we all wish a Mazal Tov to the Schwartz family. A few weeks back, we also welcomed into the world a new son to Mrs. Jan Brunswick and her husband, Ed. Zechariah Mark was born on Tuesday, September 23rd. Zechariah is the fourth child in the Brunswick family and we wish Mrs. Brunswick and her new baby good health and joy. We look forward to welcoming Mrs. Brunswick back to second grade from maternity leave in January and are so happy to have Mrs. Kramer, one of our third grade teachers, as the second grade teacher during this time. Congratulations to the whole Brunswick family! Wishing all of you Mo’adim L’Simcha, Dr. Cindy Dolgin Elementary School Principal
