Dear Schechter Parents and Guardians,

The God Squad

Kindergarten student Alexandra Lobel asked, “Why is the sky blue?” First grader Zachary Herzog queried, “Why did God make bad people? Fourth grader Joel Katz wondered, “During Passover why were the Jews slaves for such a long time?”  Nadav Franco in fifth grade asked, “Why were the Jews chosen to be the “chosen” religion? Why not a different religion?” These students and several others asked these questions at a taping for the TV show The God Squad.  The God Squad, which airs on TV Channel 29 in Nassau and Suffolk counties, features Rabbi Marc Gellman answering questions posed to them about religion, God, family and friends. Our students were invited to prepare questions for them. Approximately twenty seven of our students were then selected to participate in the special taping. While not every student was able to be part of the taping, all of our students had the opportunity to submit questions, and the questions were truly excellent. Their questions were thought provoking and displayed real reflection.

We don’t yet know when the program featuring our students will air. We will inform you as soon as we know. Until then we hope our students keep pondering such questions and bringing them to school. Their questions are worthy of discussion.

Worthy of Mention

We congratulate our third, fourth, and fifth grades for successfully completing the New York State Math Test which was administered this past Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

We are pleased to have held our second set of Parent-Teacher Conferences. Communication is vital and partnership essential in order to provide the best for your children. Our teachers were grateful for the time to sit with you and share with you important information about your child.

March 6th and 7th SSDS Book Fair returns! Students will be able to browse for books on Thursday, March 6th. Parents may purchase books during evening conferences on Thursday, March 6th or on Conference Day, Friday, March 7th.

The READ-A-THON is quickly coming to an end. If you need an additional Pledge Sheet or Reading Log sheet, please see the attachments below.

You can still make reservations for our exciting, upcoming Purim Gala to be held March 23rd, or you can place an ad in our Journal addendum.  Please look at the attached Purim Reservation and Ad Form.

 Todah Rabbah

This week a hearty “thank you” goes to Ms. Braginsky-Berman and Ms. Browne for providing a wonderful Shabbat Fair on March 2nd. The attending kindergarten families enjoyed a Shabbat flavor that extended to and sweetened their Sunday.

Shabbat Shalom
and kol tuv,

Meisha Leibson
