Dear Schechter Parents and Guardians,

Israel at 60

Across the nation Schechter Schools are participating in “Israel at 60” programs.  We at our SSDS have also planned a variety of activities, some of which we’ve already completed.  Others are ongoing and some will begin soon.  If you have walked into our school recently, you may have noted some student-made quilts constructed by our students—our first Israel at 60 “finished products.”  Under the guidance of our art teacher, Ms. Teri Fields, each class, kindergarten through grade five, completed a quilt that depicted Israel, past or present.  Some students chose to draw pictures.  Others chose to write “Israel” or other related Hebrew words in colorful lettering.  All of our students have contributed in some way.  Their combined work reveals a young generation connected to Israel, as well as their Jewish past and future.

Another “Israel at 60” project that our students are working on reaches beyond our immediate Schechter community.  Under the direction of our music teacher, Ms. Elana Stern, our students are learning and will be recording the Hebrew songs, Ani Noladiti (“I Was Born”) and Machar (“Tomorrow”). They will also participate in singing an original score written just for Schechter schools entitled, Kumi Ori (“Get Up with Light.”). Along with other students from Schechter schools across the nation, our students will be recording for a special CD entitled “Schechter Sings for Israel at 60!”

Our librarian Ms. Fran Katz is coordinating another undertaking in celebration of “Israel at 60.”   Ms. Katz is busy gathering sixty books that deal with Israel, both in English and Hebrew.  She will attempt to circulate at least 60 books about Israel among our students, for them to read independently or to read aloud to them.  We’re doing our part to help mark Israel’s 60th birthday!

Worthy of Mention

Ms. Calev, Ms. Swerdloff and all of our teachers are extended a hearty yashar koach for providing an incredible “Tolerance Week.”  Of particular note was the first performance of our SSDS Elementary School Choir.  Under the guidance of Ms. Stern and Ms. Swerdloff, the students sang fabulous renditions of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” and “Oseh Shalom.” Please click here to enjoy our SSDS Choir performance from Friday January 25th.

The second and third grade students will be having a Havdalah celebration on February 2nd at 6:45 pm.  Students and siblings will engage in an art project followed by the Havdalah service, which will be led by Rabbi Schwartz, Director of Jewish Life, and other visiting clergy.  Pizza and drinks will be served after the service.  Please join us for Havdalah activities and have an opportunity to socialize with other Schechter parents.
The Solomon Schechter PA Art Auction will take place on Saturday, February 9th!  Please plan on attending this special event.  The artwork is breathtaking, especially our students’ hand prepared art quilts honoring Israel at 60.

Purim is near!  Information about purchasing Mishloach Manot has already been distributed.  Mishloach Manot, the sending of food gifts to friends, is one of the four mitzvot associated with Purim (The Festival of Lots). The other three mitzvot include listening to the public reading of the Book of Esther, giving charity to the poor, (matanot le’evyonim) and eating a festive meal (seudah).  Mishloach Manot, a time honored tradition, is not only a wonderful way to celebrate Purim, but also a way to support our Schechter Family.  If you have any questions please feel free to call Michelle Berman at 516-829-1942.

Todah Rabbah

A “thank you” is extended to our wonderful PA, especially Ms. Browne and Ms. Braginsky for preparing the art activities for our Havdalah Program.  Additionally, a “todah rabbah” goes to Rabbi Moshe Schwartz for overseeing the ritual ceremony for our fourth grade students and families on Saturday, January 26th.  A thank you too is given to our 5th grade ambassadors Nadav Franco, Laura Nassim, Rachel Schecter, and Amanda Zucker.  These ambassadors, with Ms. Swerdloff and Ms. Katz, provided a wonderful “Wacky Wednesday” last Sunday, January 27th.  The program, for potential incoming Kindergarten and 1st grade students, provided a glimpse of the shared learning, camaraderie and warm environment we’ve all come to expect at Schechter.

Shabbat Shalom and kol tuv,

Meisha Leibson
